What I can offer & what previous clients have to say.

About Me - I love music and I love working with artists to help them reach their full potential and turn great ideas into reality.  Music has been the ever present driving force in my life, from listening to my parents mixtapes in the car to the excitement of attending and then playing my first gig. From studying music production at uni through to opening my first studio back in Brighton. From gigging and touring with bands to working on some amazing studio projects with people over the years, the energy and excitement I feel when working with music and musicians remains as strong as ever.

My years of making music have given me the opportunity to work with some incredible artists, producers and engineers. Along the way I've learnt that technical knowhow is important, but just as important is the ability to help people relax and find their best performance.  To professionally and calmly look after all of the stuff going on in the background so they can focus on making their best music.

Recordng & Mixing

Recording & Mixing - I've helped artists create music that's featured on BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 2, BBC Introducing as well as a whole host of other commercial stations, labels, blogs, websites and more. I've been involved in numerous record releases as an artist and producer and am always happy to talk about how I can help you make the music you want to make.

As well as working with some great established musicians I have a lot of experience working with artists who have done little or no recording in the past. I pride myself in being able to create a relaxed, friendly and productive environment that allows people to enjoy making music and get the best out of themselves whether they're a veteran or it's the first time time they've set foot in a studio.

My studio is a welcoming, well equipped and great sounding space to record and mix but I also have everything needed to record on location, whether it's a live show or more unusual recording venue!

I enjoy mixing people's music whether it's been recorded in a top class studio or a self-recorded project.  I've mixed music for artists all over the world, I've worked with many alternative folk and indie artists but I have also relished the opportunity to use my skills on a wide variety of genres from Kenyan dance music to American hard rock.

I previously had a studio in Brighton and since moving to Stroud with my family and Fireside Bookshop I've been creating a new studio space in central Stroud.  I've spent time creating a space that sounds great but which also feels bright, relaxed and organic. It's packed full of great equipment and instruments to help give artists the tools they need to create great music.

Video

Live Video Sessions & Music Videos - As a musician and promoter I've found the best way of getting gigs and promoting gigs is using good quality live video.  Live video sessions filmed in an attractive setting allow promoters to get a good sense of how you sound and perform in a way that audio only recordings or shaky phone footage of a gig can't.

They are also brilliant for sharing on social media and for featuring on your website.  As a promoter I find they are the first thing I look for when putting on a gig.

I have a lot of experience capturing great quality audio and video and editing it together in a way that will show you at your best and can work to a wide variety of budgets.

Composing

Composing & Sound Design - I've been lucky enough to work with some fantastic film makers, animators and visual artists over the years.  From commercial work to Arts Council funded projects, I love using sound and music to help tell a compelling story. I'm an experienced collaborator and pride myself on delivering great work on time and on budget.

Community Music - I have over fifteen years experience working on community music projects for charities, local organisations and local authorities.  Some of the highlights include working with New Note Orchestra, a community of recovering substance misusers in Brighton who make incredible music, Hullaballoo Community Quire, Brighton and Hove Art Orchestra and many more. I've worked in schools, youth clubs, children's homes, community projects and secure settings on a wide variety of projects. I believe very strongly that making music can be for everyone and that it has the power to be transformative, therapeutic or just really good fun.

My wife and I also run Music Nest 'Grownup gigs that welcome kids' where we put on great gigs you can bring the family to, with lower volume, crafts, toys, rugs and a welcoming atmosphere.  I've put on many gigs over the years as a promoter and am able to help support people in putting on their own shows. I can provide live sound and recording for small shows.

Quotes Studio Clients

Quotes from studio clients -

'Ben was an absolute pleasure to work with. Due to our time constraints, he was able to work very quickly, yet still be able to achieve a great professional outcome.  He did such a fine job of filming our band and recording and mixing the audio.  It's invaluable to have a well produced live music video that we can use to promote ourselves. This live video will certainly help us to get more shows going forward, as well as to help to promote our new album.'

Really enjoyed working with Ben in the studio - lovely relaxed atmosphere and minimal fuss setting up.  Ben really takes the time and effort to get a great sound/visual from the off, so I could just concentrate on the performance without worrying about the technical side of it. Really happy with the results, would recommend for bands and solo artists alike.

Pete Greenwood

I loved recording with Ben, it's the best recording studio I've been to and I've been to a few! A very high quality sound production, but also friendly and personal. Ben really listens to the artists he works with, and his extensive experience and absolute passion for music makes the environment a co-creative and supportive one. Working here brought out the best in my performance and sound. Ben is my first choice for recording my next EP... another plus is the tea on tap!'

Jessi Norgard

'I used Route 49 studio to record a very special song of mine. Ben was very welcoming and had a very calm presence. Communication beforehand was fantastic and so I knew we'd be in good hands which gave me confidence.  The recording session was very relaxed and I felt I could take my time. The studio itself is a great space with a good ambience.  Ben really listened to what I wanted to create regarding the song. He is very knowledgeable and patient.  I love how my song sounds and I'm very happy with the final mix. I would definitely recommend him.'

Joanne Arrowsmith

'Ben did an excellent job mixing and mastering my tracks. He made the tracks flow together smoothly with a very professional overall sound. He also went the extra mile and identified and fixed some editing issues from the original stems.'

Brendon R.

'A warm and welcoming environment for the production of music. Ben does a great job in interacting with his customers professionally while allowing for a great producer-musician relationship.
As artists we feel comfortable and respected in our creative journey and cant wait to return'

'Ben and I have worked together on several projects now  - his fabulous band The Galleons have played with my choir Hullabaloo several times, and Ben has produced two big choral projects with me. He is an absolute delight to work with and I totally trust his skill and judgement. He is calm and generous, and works with an innate understanding of both the sky high potential of - and the realistic constrains to - our projects - all with a gentle and dry humour! I totally recommend him!'

Kirsty Martin - Hullabaloo Community Quire

'We worked with Ben for our recent project 'A Sense of Place'. He worked collaboratively with our artistic director Conall Gleeson and some members of the New Note Orchestra. He is really hard working and was sensitive to our needs. He was a great fit for our orchestra.'

New Note Orchestra

'Having worked with Ben and The Galleons for many years we jumped at the chance to host Music Nest at The Brunswick.  The events gave parents a chance to attend real gigs with their young families, and the kids a chance to experience some great music.

The shows were well thought-out, organised, exceptionally curated, and most-importantly, great fun for all involved.

Music Nest attracted an audience that otherwise would have struggled to attend The Brunswick's evening shows and has put us on the map with the next generation of gig-goers!'
